Stephen was born in 1881 in Essex, in 1904 he married Nora Witchell and in 1904 they were living in West Ham Essex. In 1940 Stephen lived with his wife Nora at 119 Hindle House, Arcola Street Hackney London. He died when Hindle House was hit by a high explosive incendiary bomb on Wednesday 18th September 1940 at 21.00 hours. The bombing report describes the bombing as a major incident. Wife Nora and six other people also lost their lives. Stephen and Nora are buried together in a mass grave at East London Cemetery, Plaistow and are commemorated on the ‘Hackney Air Raid Casualties 1939-45’ plaque that is placed over the grave.
