Charles Castleman was an Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Blean (L47) a Hunt Class escort destroyer type lll 3Br deployed as part of escorts to convoy no. KMF4 (carrying troops for the allied invasion of North Africa) with HMS Wishart (D67).
HMS Blean was hit by 2 torpedos on 11th December 1942 from German U-Boat (U-443) 11 miles north-west of Oran, Algeria and sunk in 4 minutes. The 1st torpedo hit at 16.25, the 2nd torpedo at 16.27. There were 89 casualties including Charles Castleman; 94 survivors were picked up by HMS Wishart.
